DRIVE OR FLY?
Both have advantages. Flying gives you more time at home, especially if you have a tight school schedule, and saves on the wear of the vehicle you want to get you through college. Yet, we highly encourage you to consider driving, for these reasons:
- $100 / seatbelt in your vehicle discount off your project fee (5 seatbelts = $500 off project costs)
- It adds tons of freedom and convenience to your summer experience. You will get a lot more out of your experience if you can drive somewhere during your time off/free time. Usually not necessary to have a vehicle for job purposes.
- The adventure, fun and fellowship of an ultimate road trip are hard to match. Last year’s students who drove were grateful they did.
- You won’t have to put down over $600 well before project to pay for your flight. You only need about $300 per person at the time you leave to take a carload of you to Anchorage.
Flying
If you plan to fly, you need to do two things:
- Understand that if you arrive early you are responsible for your own housing before the project. We will not be able to pick you up or house you prior to the 9th.
- E-mail your itinerary to Jason Randles: Jason.randles@uscm.org, so we’ll know when to pick you up from the Anchorage airport on the 9th. The average cost for a round-trip ticket to Anchorage is about $400 – $700. If you can find a price around $400 or lower, don’t wait on it to go down! Kayak.com, orbitz.com & Cheap Tickets are good places to start looking.
Airport Pickup:
Look for the Camo bus to pull up curbside on the hour beginning with the first flight in.
Driving
Here’s the big thing you must not forget if you plan on driving: you need a passport or passport card to prove your U.S. citizenship to cross back and forth into Canada. It takes time to get a passport, apply for one as soon as you get this. REMEMBER YOUR PASSPORT!!! J
Also please e-mail Jason.randles@uscm.org your driving itinerary (who driving with, where leaving from, etc.).
