The Alaska Summer Project has been happening for decades and employers have had good experiences with Cru (Campus Crusade for Christ) students as employees. Therefore, there are a few jobs listed on the Employment Opportunities page that employers have held for Cru students. Also, in the past there has been very little difficulty with our students finding summer employment in Anchorage. However, the state of the economy during the past couple years has led to employers being more conservative in hiring for the summer (which is no different than any other part of the country). The sooner that you inquire about a job, the better chance you have at being employed right away!
While we have some job contacts in different businesses in Anchorage, it will be your responsibility to secure your own job. Each summer many of our students work together at places like McDonalds, Kmart, grocery stores, and many others. However, you may be able to find internships or jobs related to your field of study, which would be great! Any job taken must, however, meet the job guidelines and be approved by the project staff. Your job cannot conflict with project activities and most potential employers should be made aware of this.
General guidelines:
- Available work hours: 5:30am – 5:30pm Tuesday through Saturday (if you must work Mondays, please talk to the project directors before accepting the job).
- Sundays & Mondays need to be reserved for Church & Project Activities
- Every student must work between 30 – 40 hours per week
- It would be beneficial if you work with other people, as your job will be your main mission field this summer.
- Every job must be approved by the Alaska Summer Project Directors
- If you find a job before project, be sure to approve it with the Directors
Details to consider when applying:
- Day you can begin work fulltime: Thursday, June 14th ***We understand the urgency in finding a job, but please do not schedule interviews or training from the arrival date of June 9th until we start a typical week on June 11th. Exception must be approved by the Project Directors. The first few days of project activities are crucial to setting up the summer well. Thanks!
- Last day you can work: Tuesday, August 7th
- Consider travel time – if you have a car, travel won’t be an issue. Public transportation or getting a ride with other project students to work will require you to be flexible.
- Don’t forget to bring your Social Security Card as most employers require them for hiring.
- Make sure to inquire about any other details with the Operations Director
You can begin praying now for your summer job, as it will be your primary place of ministry this summer!
